Find a Good Online Education Program for Distance Learning

You have decided to go back to school and would like to find a good online education program. You have decided on the subject for your major. You know what level of degree you would like to earn. You know how long you would like to take to earn this degree. Now all you have to do is find the right online program. There are several things you should think about when judging the online programs.

First: What is the typical length of a program in your field of study?

If you want to earn a bachelor’s degree in roughly two years, you will have to look for a program that offers that timeframe. Some schools schedule your classes one at a time, which means it takes longer to earn a degree. For those who are very busy with family and work, this arrangement may be the most beneficial. If you would like to earn your degree faster, you might be able to double up on classes. Before doing so, make sure that you will still have the time to dedicate to your studies and that you will be able to do so with the school. (Some schools do not allow this.)

Second: What are the tuition, fees and other associated costs?

Evaluate the schools based on value – if two schools offer basically the same educational experience and same level of degree but one will save you a couple hundred bucks, that is the school for you.

Third: Is the school accredited, well-known and respected?

A good online program is through an accredited school, allowing you to qualify for financial aid and other assistance.

Fourth: What kind of support system does the school offer you?

Most, but not all, online schools have academic advisors and other support staff that can help you reach all of the educational goals that you set for yourself. In addition to this support staff, you will typically have access to the school’s online library and other educational resources as well.

Fifth: Does anything about this program stand out to you?

Sometimes the right school will jump out at you. You may find yourself seeing ads for this school, or the school’s name in odd places. You might have just read an article about the program in the paper or online. Whatever it is, if something makes one school standout above the others in the same field, then take it as a sign of good luck.

A good online degree is one that will not only let you reach your potential but inspire you to reach a little higher, dig a little deeper and work a little harder to go beyond what you feel capable of.

Online Education

Deciding to pursue further educational opportunities is a big enough decision in itself. Deciding to pursue that goal online creates new and different challenges somewhat different from those in a face-to-face setting. You’ll have questions such as:

o What will it be like not having the opportunity to meet my instructor?

o What kinds of assignments will I have?

o How will I access the assignments?

o How will I turn in the assignments?

o When will I do my work?

o Do I need a textbook? If so, how will I get it?

o Will I have the opportunity to interact with my classmates?

With those questions in mind, and having received my masters degree online as well as being an online course developer and instructor, I thought it would be helpful to offer some answers to your questions and tips for having a successful online learning experience.

o First things first – once you receive your username and password, log into our class and explore the site thoroughly. Click on all buttons to see what things are and what resources your instructor has made available to you. You should have access to information regarding accessing and submitting assignments. If not, this would be a good question for your instructor

o Look through the assignments to get an overview of the expectations for the course.

o If a textbook is needed, make sure you obtain it right away.

o Where appropriate, print out information that you’ll need to access regularly.

o Send an email to your instructor introducing yourself and asking any questions you have. Do this whether you have questions or not! Developing an early relationship with your instructor is very important. It lets him/her know a little about you and personalizes your online experience.

o If there is a Discussion Board, post a comment or question for your classmates. This will initiate communication which will be valuable as your progress through the course. If someone else has already posted, respond to that post to continue the conversation.

o It is so easy to let things “slide” when you don’t have a classroom to report to or have the “evil eye” of an instructor should you fall behind, It is IMPERATIVE that you establish a routine immediately so you do not fall behind. Catching up can present challenges that are difficult to overcome.

o Throughout the course, continue entering posts in the Discussion Board. Get to know your classmates.

o Send a weekly email to your instructor, even if its intent is purely conversational.

o Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride! Online learning is an exciting experience! Make the most of it!!

Whatever your goals may be,

Kind of Career Will I Have With an Online Education Degree

While having an education degree is valuable in traditional areas such as elementary, middle, and high schools, you can also get a job in other fields with an online education degree. People with education degrees work in many different places, such colleges and universities, libraries, and hospitals.

Online education degrees provide the knowledge and training that all teachers need to make a positive contribution to the organizations they work for. Keep in mind that this is a broad overview, and that a more specialized degree, such as a Masters degree in Special Education, goes more in-depth.

Every year, more than one million college graduates enter the workforce. This means that every single person hunting for a job faces stiff competition from other grads. People who have their online education degrees have the competitive advantage over people who don’t have an education degree. They obtained the education needed to meet employers’ expectations: they have an established knowledge of educational concepts.

Education degrees will prepare you for entry-level careers in education, such as elementary, middle, or high school teaching positions. If you are already in the workforce, then an education degree can help you advance your career. If you are thinking about a career change, then getting your online education degree can help with that as well.

People with online education degrees have jobs in many different areas. The need for qualified educators is growing, and schools around the world are snatching them up as fast as they can. If you have a passion for helping people learn, then you will find a job with a degree in education.

Some examples of employers who hire people with their online education degrees include:

  • Athletic Coach
  • Teacher’s Assistant
  • Professional Tutor
  • Corporate Trainer
  • Middle School Teacher
  • Preschool Teacher
  • Special Education Teacher

Many people also choose to continue on to graduate school. In order to have a career in administration in an educational setting, a Master’s degree is a must. Some grads go to graduate school right after receiving their education degrees, but many more choose to work for a few years first. Either way, getting your Master’s degree in education is a great way to ensure a long and lucrative career.

Some jobs that people with a Master’s degree in Education hold include:

  • Principal
  • School Administrator
  • School Superintendent
  • Guidance Counselor
  • Speech and Language Pathologist
  • Vice-Principal
  • Curriculum Director

  • Educational Writer
  • Reading Specialist

As with most other competitive fields, it helps to have real world experience before graduation to stand out from the competition. People who have internships, job experience or volunteer experience under their belt along with their education degrees are more likely to get hired right after graduation than those who just have their degree.

Education and Training Study Tips

Education and TrainingTraining and vocational schools are educational institutions that provide practical and vocational skills and knowledge related to a specific competency, trade, occupation or profession. Training schools usually provide materials and equipment used in actual situations that an individual often faces at their workplace. This is similar to an on-the-job training that is done under normal working situations or a simulation of it. Vocational school, on the other hand, teaches students how to do a certain job and the skills needed for a given career.

Many thousands of students undertake and enroll in vocational education and training courses every year. However for those new to study, or returning to study, it can be difficult to get into an effective routine. The following article contains four good rules to follow that will help you achieve the most possible out of your education and training course.

Training and vocational schools are often operated by different federal departments such as the Department of Labor, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services. All of these government institutions provide these programs especially for welfare recipients, poor adults and youth, and workers who have lost their jobs. However, there are also private training and vocational school that are subsidized by private colleges and universities for students who cannot afford to study full-time or for workers who need additional skills for mastery of their craft, certification and licensure, or for promotion.

Training schools have different programs to provide the skills and knowledge required to achieve certification or completion. There are two categories for training and these are on-the-job and off-the-job. On-the-job training places students within the normal working conditions while off-the-job training is done outside of the working area and in classrooms for students to concentrate more on the training itself. But there are some programs in training schools that require both practical and theoretical lessons to be provided simultaneously. These training schools usually have classrooms where an area is designed as a simulation of a “real time” working area. Training schools cater to various levels of students of different ages such as those that teach languages, arts, performing arts, sports, and sciences, as well as those that provide training for improving work skills for their jobs.

Vocational schools are similar to training schools in that students are prepared for jobs using manuals and practical activities which are related to specific trade, occupation or vocation. However, these educational institutions are primarily provided at the secondary or post-secondary level which is similar to an apprenticeship. The programs are designed for students to immediately get jobs after attending vocational schools or to continue their education in colleges or universities. However, vocational schools do not belong to the higher education category.

Examples of vocational school programs include:

  • Auto repair technician/mechanic
  • Bookkeeping
  • Carpentry
  • Child day care management
  • Computer programming
  • Cooking and catering
  • Criminal justice
  • Dental assistant
  • Electrician
  • Floral design
  • Medical transcription
  • PC repair and maintenance
  • Photography
  • Plumbing
  • Veterinary assistant or technician
  • Website design

Create a Study Space

Before beginning it is important to create your own study area. It is important that this area is available at any time and is free from disruptions like television. Keep this space clean as a de-cluttered area means a de-cluttered mind. Have a good light and chair at your desk and before sitting down to begin ensure that all materials needed are available – having to search for these later will get your mind out of the ‘zone’.

Create a Routine

Make a list of all your assessment due dates and set smaller due dates to ensure work is completed on time. Work out your learning style and study technique. Once you know this you can effectively plan your time. To do this think about whether your prefer to study with music or in silence, in a group or individually, indoors or outdoors or in long hours or short bursts.

Finally, work on your least preferable assignment or subject first. If you start on your favourite it is likely that you will spend a disproportionate amount of time on it impacting the opportunity to succeed in the others.

Health, Stress and Relaxation

Research shows that you are more likely to retain information if you study for less and get longer night’s sleep than if you stay up all night and forfeit rest. Drink herbal teas to relax and practice deep breathing for calming. It is important to avoid creating a reliance on coffee and energy drinks as well as alcohol. Remember to take your breaks where it is logical to do so, like between models, different subjects or study topics. Most of all reward yourself after you have completed certain goals.

Create Goals

When setting goals the most important thing to remember is to ensure they are realistic. Aiming to complete a huge assignment in a couple of hours is probably going to be unrealistic. Small goals are encouraging as each time you achieve one you are motivated. Set your goals according to your strengths and weaknesses.
